In Case You Missed It

That tweet summarises my evaluation of my life in 2013.

I believe dreams, visions, and ideas are all things that drive us as individuals. We set goals, we make plans on how to go about our various goals, investing time, money and energy, cultivating this our goal, nourishing it daily. We hope that it will be the breakthrough, the big break. We give up personal comfort, sacrificing lots of things because we believe that this goal/target must work.

Many wanted to achieve higher levels but that didn't happen. Many worked hard but it just didn't work out for them this time. I have come to understand that learning from a failed goal is just as important as achieving the goal.

I had high hopes for this year. I strongly believed that by the end of this year, I would have realized a lot of my set plans. I ended up achieving very few of them and failing to achieve lots of my goals. It hurts.

Now what?

Should I move to something else? Should I continue to try? These are the questions plaguing my soul this dark morning.

Hey, here is an idea:

Can't we just forget the past. It's over and the longer you dwell on it the worse you'll feel. Everyone misses goals.

As a lover of watching football (I said watching, though I think one day I will be a player *in my head*) I know this: Great footballers miss even the clearest of chances, but that doesn't stop them from scoring in the next game and/or even scoring in the same game.  So you, like I, didn't make it. Draw a line and forget it. You can't change anything by being sad and gloomy thinking about your failure to reach that goal.

When you've settled the above then you can revisit your goal and it flaws. Focus on what you think you did right and what you think you did wrong. As a lover of Football Manager.....ok as an addict of FM, I also know this: when I lose a game, I usually go back to tactics, check formations and positions, I asked my backroom staff what went wrong and how to fix it. And I try to take into consideration all their advise. Same thing is applicable to real life issues. You miss your goal, then sit and ask the why, what and how. What you are looking for is “what needs to be changed”. This is not a“beat up”session on yourself!

Now that you've discovered what went wrong, use what you learned to reposition the goal you previously missed and to  achieve your future goals. Use the mistakes you made when you missed your goals to help you complete the new ones. Come up with a plan to help you reach your goals. Some of the most successful people in the world missed goals occasionally. Think about this when you get upset about missing your goals.
