Know Your Place

Everyone of us is uniquely created, we each have the potential to make us into whatever we desire to be;  Everyone of us has something that distinguishes us from the rest. Each of us is gifted!!!

Al Gore was said to be one of the brightest individuals in the position of leadership in the USA, he was said to be the driving force behind the Clinton administration. He was the man formulating policy, bringing ideas to the table; he was the unseen strength until he decided since he was the power behind the scene, he too could be the President. What he lost consciousness of was that everyone is uniquely talented, Clinton was the people's person, he had the charisma and that was one of what made him a successful president.

Gordon Brown was another brainy in Britain; he was responsible for rescuing Britain during the financial tsunami that hit the entire world via financial policies. He unlike Al Gore became the Prime minister but his impact was less profound than when he handled finances.

If your leader is successful and it's due to your direct or indirect contribution, don't get ahead of yourself, don't think  you are the one making it happen for him and you want to have a go at the position of leadership. Even if what the leader brings to the table is little, you must understand that this small quality is what distinguished him or her.  There are people who, that no matter how talented they are, no matter how bright they seem, should never aspire to front-line leadership.

Know your place in the scheme of things. Intelligence doesn't translate into good leadership. Many leaders aren't as skilled as their followers but the ability to manage various intelligent people and make them work is one of the greatest qualities of a leader in my opinion. The best leaders build resonance with their teams; they are in tune with the group's emotions and needs.

I am no expert on leadership, but one thing I know is, if you are a follower, don't jump ship; learn what you must, be humble, your being brilliant doesn't mean you will be a good leader. We see lots of "startups" today in Nigeria, people who probably should have stayed working under another boss, who will do excellent as intrapreneurs  but maybe  pride, inappropriate  ambition or even greed has led to strike out on their own as entrepreneurs.  Your working under someone doesn’t mean that you cannot be rich or successful.

Newsflash; lots of "CEOs" are struggling; lots of G.Os who should have been impactful assistant pastors somewhere are failing as G.Os.

We all cannot be leaders, not everyone has the quality to lead and the rest must know their place as followers.

If everyone is a leader, who are they leading? Know Your Place.

  3. Not all second in command should aspire to be first in command. Some are best suited to working behind the main person but the sad truth is that we all want to be alpha numero even when we've not finish the learning curve.

    Deep one as usual.

  4. Good piece. A conversation I was having with a friend about how a lot employees seem to work for only as long as it takes to learn enough to strike out on their own (print industry).

You don't have to be the boss to lead.
